Better User Experience Testing

The purpose of software testing has been steadily shifting from ‘does it work?’ to ‘does it deliver the required business outcomes?’, with an increasing focus on end-user requirements. It’s no longer enough to rely on metrics such as x% of tests passed. Now we have to understand the impact on the people using the product and the wider implications for the organization. There is a need to bridge that gap between meeting testing objectives and actually meeting customer expectations.

This isn’t always easy.

Different kinds of testing require different kinds of people, skills and processes. Some may be less susceptible to automation than others, with the risk that those things that aren’t automated are simply left behind. As a result, releases can go live having passed functional test criteria but still fail to deliver in key areas. The potential impacts on the business aren’t known until it’s too late.

Bridging this gap is central to what Eggplant has been working towards with the most recent updates to its Digital Automation Intelligence suite.

Back in August, we brought out Release Insights, which gives test teams more information about the quality of a given release, drawing on data from Eggplant AI and from across the rest of the CI/CD pipeline to predict its likely impact on the end user.

The latest version of Eggplant Functional can now be run in Usability Mode. This allows you to check automatically for certain factors that could negatively impact user experience, such as targets that move right before you click on them, buttons that don’t provide visual feedback when clicked, and slow-loading content.

Then there’s Effortless Performance Testing – an integration of Eggplant AI with Eggplant Performance that enables you to re-use your functional test models to create and run performance tests. This represents a huge efficiency saving and enables teams to run load tests with no technical knowledge and no coding.

Each of these releases on its own is significant. But together they’re starting to add up to something a little more revolutionary. Eggplant has always been about testing the user experience rather than just code, but we’re now starting to take this to some exciting new places. And there is much more to come.
